Observation of homeless females, who choose to panhandle. An event that is usually dominated by males has become quite the “hobby” of most homeless, transient, and drug-addicted females. In most cases they are monitored by a male companion. So, is using women an effort to improve financial gain for the homeless male?
In this particular photograph, however, the female is disabled. She chooses to continue these behaviors to obtain funding to support herself. Minutes before this picture was taken, she chose to set up camp in front of a church. But the church officials asked her to leave the premises–this was not the place for this kind of activity. She was escorted away, whereupon she moved two blocks down and set up camp in front of a recently closed strip club. Upon further observation, I noticed a black female pull up to inquire about her situation. She informed her that she did not have to live this way, that there are organizations to help her. However, the first woman refused, opting to stay in the 95 degrees heat to panhandle. After a brief interview, I gave her five dollars and she continued to work to obtain more funding. She needed more money to buy dog food for a pet she had chained to the wheelchair. The pet is not shown in this photograph. I left wondering whether she wheeled herself to this destination or was dropped off.
