In the “Beginning Acrylics” class I did about three years ago at
A- B Tech, my teacher Ursula Gullow talked about mud: how when you overwork colors you can end up with a sort of muddy neutral brown. I never forgot this, it often feels I live my whole life either in mud or in fear of getting in mud. My 3-year-old daughter has no such fear. I watched vaguely alarmed as she made this picture, recklessly mixing orange and black and slapping it over a huge sheet of flip chart paper. The mud! But she didn’t care and continued to smush napkins, q-tips and other items onto the same paper. She then walked away and I was left amazed.
