Today the warmth of 41 degrees was all I needed for my day. All of a sudden things seemed more within reach. I smiled. I’m currently working on a project which consists of making sounds for this wonderful sampler called the Morphogene; a modular sampler created by Asheville’s own Make Noise. Playing with field recordings and sounds on my computer and mixing everything together creates new ideas, and today was no exception. However, in the spur of the moment I decided to pick up my wind instrument from Laos, the Khen and decided to improvise on it. It has a very unique sound, rich in overtones and harmonies. Playing on the Khen today led me to also play on my black oil heater, as I love its metallic resonant hollow sounds, while a loop of an acoustic bass was playing through the speakers from my computer. All of it made me just want to have a cigarette on my back porch and another cup of coffee.
