The Chattanooga Public Library’s 4th floor, known simply as the Forth Floor, used to be storage space. Along with the community's help they decided to turn that space into a place where the community can acquire knowledge supporting the production, connection, and sharing of knowledge by offering access to tools like 4K Monitor, HTC Vive Virtual Reality booth, screen printing and heat press, Chattanooga Zine Library + zine making lab, a button maker, floor loom, sewing lab with sewing machines, serger, embroidery machine, power tools, hand tools, soldering bench, arduino and electronics project kits, Adobe Creative Cloud, Agile co-working spaces with white boards, projectors, couches, tables, special event space with sound system, stage, and presentation equipment-and there will be more to come. It is all accompanied with instruction. Pictured is a zine making workshop where people of all ages are learning the Dadaist tradition of zine making. As we are all living this age of gentrification, where almost every modern city in America is experiencing the poorer being pushed out by the wealthier, and being given less access to knowledge and access to the tools that enable them to make things, libraries do not need to die - they need to understand how to connect with the modern world.
