Fitness for Foodies
Meet Georgia Walker. She works at the Underground Gym, as well as online and independently, as GWalker Performance. She’s a “performance coach,” and a personal trainer. I don’t know the difference. I don’t know anything. I have literally never been to a professional gym in my entire life, until today.
Here are some true facts: I am 51 years old. I eat cheeseburgers and fried chicken for a living. I am lazy AF. I’ve also never been much of a “joiner.” Not of private clubs, or secret societies, and certainly not of gyms. I did work out at home back in the day. Weight lifting, push-ups, pull-ups, etc. I did it a lot, and I was a rock hard specimen of manliness for a long time. Nahhhht so much anymore. Now I’m what I would call, “soft around the edges.”
Well, I don’t want to end up being a gelatinous blob of goo by the time they pour me into my coffin, so I thought I’d try an experiment: I posted on Facebook asking if there are any personal trainers out there who might be willing to do a trade with me. Social media exposure for some fitness stuff. I had a surprising number of takers, and I landed on Georgia!
Today I walked from my house in the French Broad Avenue Neighborhood to meet her for a preliminary consultation at her gym over on Biltmore Ave. Vortex Doughnuts was on my way, so I stopped in for an apple caramel doughnut. OF COURSE I DID.
When I got there, Georgia asked me about my eating habits, and I saw her eyes get kind of wide. We think that I might be taking in between 2,500 calories or more per meal, of fat, sugar, carbs, and protein, and that’s not likely to change any time soon. I also described my walking habits to her, and she seemed as impressed by those as she was horrified by my diet.
As part of the consultation, she had me a do a squat. Then she showed me how to do a squat. She also observed me doing push-up, pull-ups, and lunges… not lunches… STU… and seems to think I that I’m not in the most terrible shape on Earth, so that’s encouraging.
Based on this first meeting, Georgia and I are gonna get along great! She’s going to work with me one day a week at the gym from now on, and also give me “homework.” I’ll be posting lots of pictures and videos on social media of me and Georgia, and keeping my readers in the loop as this experiment continues. Rock hard specimen or gelatinous blob? Which will I be?!? Stay tuned to find out!
